1st Blog Post!

Well, hello internet user!
Welcome to my brand new website. I’m still learning the ropes of running one of these things, so bear with me over the next few weeks (or months, realistically) while I get it all figured out, lol.

The plan here is pretty simple: this site is a place to showcase the work I feel best represents my current ideas and skills, while also building a bit of an archive for older pieces. Eventually, I’ll have a full shop up and running with rotating paintings, drawings, and prints at a range of prices.

A little about me—I'm Alex, an artist based in the St. Louis area and currently working toward my BFA at Truman State University. Lately, my practice revolves around making loose, scratchy marks until something hidden starts to show itself—usually a face, figure, or space that feels pulled from memory. Once I spot it, I start defining it with more intentional, representational lines. These figures are often anchored in hazy environments and sometimes accompanied by scrawled text—names, phrases, fragments—that either title the piece or become part of it.

I mostly work in soft pastel and charcoal because I like how immediate and unpredictable they are. That kind of chaos fits with my intuitive approach to artmaking—things emerge when they’re ready to, and I try to keep up.

I’m hoping to make semi-regular blog posts, but let’s be honest, I may totally forget. The best way to stay updated on what I’m doing is through Instagram: @alexlewis.studio
(I’m in the process of moving off my old account: @jameslewis.studio)

Thanks for stopping by, and enjoy this little sketch in the meantime :)
